Tanya Stephens giving fans one song per day in April

Written by on April 9, 2020

The last time Tanya Stephens released an album was back in 2013 when she dropped ‘ Guilty’. Fans have been waiting with bated breath for her to release new music and the singer was expected to quench their thirst in the coming months with a 12-track project.

But, Stephens has decided to thrill her fans with the release of 30 songs, one per day, for the entire month of April. Already fans have been treated to seven new tracks, with another expected to drop today.

In an interview with THE STAR, Stephens said that with more than 40 new songs on the list of potential tracks for her pending album, she was finding it difficult making the cut to 12, and said the ‘song a day’ option has allowed her to give her audience more.

“My distributor started getting antsy, saying I been saying I coming with an album for the longest time, but I just couldn’t chose 12 songs. It was easier to narrow down the list I had to 30 than to 12. We could have done a double album, but that wasn’t what I wanted. This is what feels right to me, and so one song a day for the 30 days of April is what my audience will be getting,” she said.

The These Streets artiste said that the idea was birthed before the COVID-19 outbreak and has nothing to do with quenching people’s thirst for entertainment right now.

“COVID-19 kinda played into it because now people are stuck inside and it looks almost like we planned it. But if you ask (Richard) Roach (who produced one of the tracks) or any of the people involved with this, it’s something we were going to do regardless. We wanted to release an album, but this way has allowed me enough time to sift through all the songs and give my audience not just more but the best,” she said.

Although the recording process has been a breeze for Stephens, who works from her home studio, she says getting the songs out every day has been challenging.

“The enormity of it never soak in until we started. When the first day came, I was like, ‘Jesus, me affi do this 29 more times. What have I done?’. I have to do a different artwork for every song and so it’s a lot more work,” she said. “But without something that pushes me, I don’t move, so this was a great spurring for me. I’ve always been ahead of every curve that comes in music because I like to stay out front, especially because I know that I’m not held to the same standards as everyone else.”

She said that if she is coming out with an album, it cannot be the ‘same old, same old’ as she is judged harder than others.

“”Being held to a different standard doesn’t bother me. I accept the challenge. If I couldn’t rise to the occasion, maybe it would bother me,” she said.

The singles Alone TogetherBackazTrying Man and Window have been released so far. With several more tracks to come, which include a few collaborations, Stephens says there is a song to suit every demographic. She said that so far, the response to her new music has been overwhelming.
